At the Paris Auto Show, BMW unveiled the X2 compact crossover concept. Then the car seemed futuristic, with unusual body shapes and door handle designs. But less than six months later, the manufacturer introduced the official serial crossover BMW X2. In comparison with the concept, there are significant differences, but similar features still remain.
The variety of trim levels of the new BMW X2 is very diverse, from a conventional crossover to a sporty version. A similar situation with engines, the manufacturer installs gasoline and diesel units with all-wheel or front-wheel drive on the novelty. The main audience for the BMW X2 is considered to be young active people who value comfort, individuality and refined, unique style. At the same time, the presence of many functions and safety systems is of great importance to them.
The dimensions of the new compact crossover BMW X2 are smaller than its fellow X1. The length of the new item is 70 mm shorter than the X1. Although the wheelbase is the same - 2670 mm. Despite this, the new BMW X2 has got shorter overhangs, the sill line is higher, and the roof line at first glance resembles a coupe. The most important step of the designers was the radiator grill, as if it was turned upside down and this is the first time among all existing cars of the company. At first glance, it is very interesting, but as the fans of the brand noted, this slightly spoiled the look of the new BMW X2.
The dimensions of the new serial crossover BMW X2 are:
- crossover length - 4360 mm;
- vehicle height - 1526 mm;
- width - 1824 mm;
- ground clearance - 182 mm.
The luggage compartment of the new BMW X2 crossover is quite large 470 liters. The interior of the car is a lot like the X1. The dashboard is similar in many ways, including the infotainment display, the dashboard, and even the armrests between the front seats. The BMW X2 comes standard with a 6.5 ″ display for the infotainment system. Optionally installing a navigation system, the display will increase to 8.8 ″. If you want more, you can additionally install a color head-up display. The driver will receive information about the road from the navigator, indications of the state of the car and the necessary data about the trip.
As for the charged M Sport X and M Sport models, the interior is trimmed with a combination of Alcantara and the new Micro Hexagon fabric. Optionally, you can use perforated Dakota leather as inserts, or change the color of the stitching to bright yellow or to match the body color. In addition, the buyer of the BMW X2 will be provided with a choice of polished aluminum, gloss black or polished lacquered wood inserts. As an option, the customer can install decorative LED lighting in the interior of the BMW X2 in six different shades. For an additional fee, you can install a panoramic roof with a sliding front part.
Complete set of the new crossover BMW X2
From the outset, the new BMW X2 crossover was conceived as a front-wheel-drive car, and the engine was located transversely. The engineers used a similar solution during the construction of the latest generation of the famous MINI car (since this brand belongs to BMW). The first on sale are the BMW X2 sDrive20i, a 2-liter engine, turbocharged standard four, 192 horses and a maximum torque of 280 Nm. In terms of gasoline consumption, the average figures are from 5.5 to 5.9 liters per hundred. The second variant of the BMW X2 crossover, which should also be expected in the near future, is the diesel xDrive20d. Under the hood is a 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel unit with a volume of 2 liters. The power of the unit is slightly less - 190 horses and 400 Nm of torque. Average fuel consumption is about 4.6-4.8 liters per 100 kilometers. A 7-speed robotic gearbox with two clutches is installed in a pair to the gasoline unit. For a diesel engine, an 8-speed gearbox (classic automatic).
Regardless of the option chosen, the engineers installed paddle shifters in the interior of the BMW X2 for gear shifting. Outwardly, the characteristic difference between the regular version and the charged version is the front bumper. In the usual configuration, it is simple, but in a charged M-ki with a chrome trim in the center. According to the manufacturer, closer to the middle of 2018, the BMW X2 will be replenished with xDrive18i modifications, with an economical 3-cylinder 140 horsepower engine and mechanics (or robotic gearbox).
The all-wheel drive petrol version of the xDrive20i will also appear, and they also promise to diversify the diesel series with a 2-liter unit and 150 horsepower. Such options will be both full- and front-wheel drive, mechanics or an automatic transmission are installed in a pair. The suspension of the new BMW X2 provides three options: adaptive with Damper Control dynamic shock absorbers, sporty with a reduced ground clearance by 10 mm (more likely to be installed on crossovers with the M package) and standard, as for the X1 crossover.
At the heart of the serial crossover BMW X2 installed 17 ″ wheels, but the maximum configurations provide for the installation of 19 ″ or 20 ″. The most noticeable thing that migrated from the concept to the production BMW X2 is the company's badge on the rear pillar, near the roof, similar to the one on the BMW 2000CS or 3.0 CSL coupe. The security systems were also updated, the engineers literally stuffed them with active sensors and assistants. Lane change warning system, speed limit control, sign recognition, pedestrian recognition, and each time this list will expand.
The price of the crossover serial BMW X2
The official start of sales of the serial BMW X2 is scheduled for mid-March 2018, in Germany. The BMW X2 sDrive20i trims start at € 39,200, while the charged M Sport X and M Sport trims start at € 40,650. Diesel configurations of the BMW X2 xDrive20d will cost from 43,800 euros, and the charged M Sport X and M Sport diesels from 50,200 euros.
